Tangled Web
Dark Eye’s third episode borrows its premise from other Dalek stories once again. However, this one I would say is completely successful and more fulfilling than the previous disc proved. With this instalment, we finally meet Kotris properly; begin to find out about the Daleks real intention and why the Time Lords are ignoring the Doctor.
Unlike its predecessors, Tangled Web could be heard as a stand alone episode. If you excluded the final cliff-hanger, I would have no problem picking up this story and listening to it by itself of an evening. Every other episode, I would want to re-listen to in order to get the full effect. With the Daleks still chasing them, the Doctor begins to black out in the TARDIS. Memories of Lucie Miller come flooding back, and Molly has to land them on an alien planet. With a dead TARDIS and an incapacitated Doctor, the most terrifying of things happen. The Daleks help them!
This twist is one of the best in the box set. It may have been done a few done a few times, but never in this way. I don’t wish to spoil to story for you, but the twists and turns are ones I never saw coming. It also introduces a new species towards the end, only to have them killed within seconds. They would have been great returning creatures, reminding me of the Viyrans in some ways, but they were destroyed far too early.
Tangled Web, as I already said, also shows a lot about the underlying plot. We see Kotris properly, and, as the ending plays out, finally get the Daleks back to their devious and murderous selves. It really is a satisfying end to the adventure. It is a lot better to hear them like this, and get the hints about what they are planning. Finally...
And, as the destructive ending plays out, the story really does get moving at last. The destruction of a TARDIS, the death of Time Lords and the Daleks plan all play a part in the best cliff-hanger in the story. Overall, this edition has to be my pick of the set. Its brilliant remaking of a classic idea into something new and fresh. We all know how it’s going to end, in one way or another, but I wasn’t quite expecting just that. And, look out for a sneaky reference to something from the new TV series. All in all, if there was one reason to buy Dark Eyes, this is it.
